Stephen Neary
Hoosier-born Stephen Neary’s love of animation started in his youth, when he created stop-motion shorts such as Dog vs. the GI Joe. His love of the craft eventually brought him to New York University to study animation with Academy Award®-winning animator John Canemaker. While attending school, he worked on shorts for SNL's TV "Funhouse" and worked on the hit preschool Nick Jr. show "Wonder Pets!", as well as the BBC's "3rd and Bird."
His third-year film, Shark Suit: the Musical, won two Student Emmys at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences 2008 College TV Awards. This lively, whimsical tale of a man who loves wearing his shark suit was honored with the NBR’s inaugural Marion Carter Green Award, named for the former NBR Board Member and supported by her son, producer Laurence Mark.
Chicken Cowboy, Stephen's thesis project, made with support from NYU's prestigious Richard Protovin Memorial Animation Production Grant, was awarded post-production services from Silver Sound in NYC. Upon graduating from NYU in spring 2008, Stephen landed an internship in the story department at Blue Sky Studios in White Plains, New York, working on Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs. “I mentioned receiving the NBR grant in my interview; everyone was impressed.” He has since been hired full-time as a storyboard artist.
Stephen is in the preliminary stages of his next short animation, Dr. Breakfast, for which he has been creating “doodles” on the long train ride from his Brooklyn home to his job in White Plains. “The story isn't quite solid yet, but so far this film is feeling less concretely narrative than ones I've done before. I like the idea of playing with emotional continuity rather than narrative continuity . . . stream of consciousness, more dreamlike.”
Here's a list of other awards Stephen has won:
NYU Wasserman Award third place undergrad winner, Bigfoot's Eulogy, April 2008
National College Television Awards, Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, second place winner, Animation/Non-Traditional, Bigfoot's Eulogy, March 2007
College Television Awards Festival, Festival Favorite, Bigfoot's Eulogy, March 2007
Adobe Design Achievement Awards, Animation Finalist, June 2006 National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, National Student Emmy Award winner, Technical Achievement, June 2004
